Communication and Interpreting

Interpreting is a human service related field that is utilized in a myriad of different life situations, such as medical, mental health, law, education, etc. An interpreter, who must uphold the professional code of conduct (PDF), is a bilingual and bicultural professional working in a true profession and should be regarded as such.

Sign language interpreting is the process of transmitting spoken English to or from American Sign Language (ASL) and/or gestures for communication between Deaf and hearing individuals.  Interpreting can also including transmitting the information through tactile methods, by writing or typing, or other methods that can meet a given persons needs.

Kapi`olani Community College has a well-established program offering American Sign Languages (ASL) courses. Our Deaf ASL instructors use their natural language, American Sign Language, and the acclaimed Signing Naturally curriculum to guide students through lessons and activities that simulate everyday situations. In class you will learn to tune into a visual culture. Outside class you will have opportunities to meet and interact with members of Hawaii's Deaf communities. Hawai`i Interpreting Services is a comprehensive, one-stop service center providing quality sign language interpreters, real-time captioners, and computer-assisted notetakers to facilitate communication between deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind, and hearing individuals. These services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on six islands in the state of Hawai`i (Kaua`i, O`ahu, Moloka`i, Lana`i, Maui, and the island of Hawai`i). Hawai`i Interpreting Services is owned and operated by Sabina Wilford, dedicated professionals who are fluent in American Sign Language and experienced as interpreters.

Hawai’i RID, Inc. is an affiliate chapter of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID, Inc.), a non-profit professional organization dedicated to the advancement of the field of professional interpreting. Administers the RID national testing system to certify interpreters and provides a registry of local interpreters to the public upon request.

The Hawaii Speech-Language-Hearing Association is a professional, non-profit organization of speech-language pathologists and audiologists that is nationally recognized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). We are approved by ASHA’s Continuing Education Board to provide continuing education activities in speech-language pathology and audiology. ASHA CE Provider approval does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products or clinical procedures. Register for CEUs at each event.
